Why Hirsutism Shouldn’t Hurt!

EmpressBody know how hurtful, damaging and debilitating Hirsutism can be for many women’s self esteem. It is a condition very close to our hearts. Hirsutism is a condition of unwanted, male-pattern hair growth in women. Hirsutism results in excessive amounts of dark, course hair on body areas where men typically grow hair — face, chest and back. It’s as painful for women today (especially with the almost unattainable beauty pressures of Instagram) as it was in the Victorian era when women with Hirsutism were exhibited in circuses:

EmpressBody are dedicated to bringing holistic and organic relief to feminine health problems and ailments to ensure that all women feel empowered, and not embarrassed or ashamed of something their body does. Everyone is beautiful whether they have to pluck the odd hair, or if they have a full beard. EmpressBody are here to listen and to help.

What are the causes of Hirsutism?

EmpressBody have done the research and found out that Hirsutism is a symptom of many medical disorders associated with the hormones called androgens. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in which the ovaries produce excessive amounts of androgens, is the most common cause of hirsutism and may affect up to 10% of women. Hirsutism is very common and often improves with medical management.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common hormonal disorder that affects 5% –10% of women. Because of the variable nature of PCOS, its diagnosis is based upon the combination of clinical, ultrasound, and laboratory features. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition associated with hormonal imbalances that cause the ovaries to overproduce androgens. It is a common cause of hirsutism. In women with PCOS, multiple small follicles develop in the ovaries that appear as cysts, hence the term “polycystic.” These small cysts are actually immature ovarian follicles that failed to mature and ovulate.

- Excessive production of cortisol by the adrenal glands (Cushing syndrome)

- Menopause

- Certain types of Medications

But how can it be treated?

EmpressBody frequently get asked how women can relieve the symptoms of hirsuitism. There are lots of ways t tackle the issue, and are some are more invasive than others:

Medical Treatments:

- Birth control pills

- Androgen receptor blockers

Cosmetic Treatments:

- Shaving

- Effornithine cream

- Waxing

- Bleaching

- Plucking

- Depilatory agents

- Electrolysis

- Laser hair treatments

But many women don’t realize that EmpressBody offer an alternative. One that does not include putting powerful hormones into your body or undergoing painful cosmetic treatments that won’t solve the issue and frequently make the hair growth worse.

EmpressBody’s Hirsutism Hero:

EmpressBody are in awe of so many female role models in the media right now. There are so many influencers on social media using their influence and reach to help people, to open the conversation about feminine health issues that don’t make it into main stream media, and Harnaam Kaur is one of the most inspirational.

Harnaam is a former teaching assistant turned model, activist, and and Guinness Book Record holder. Harnaam sports a full beard as a result of living with PCOS. At age 16, Kaur was baptized Sikh, which meant a commitment to letting her hair grow out in accordance with religious beliefs. This lead to the painful choice between the way she looked and her religious devotion. Harnaam made a grounded and balanced choice that her faith meant more to her than anything she or anyone else might think about the way she looks, and the way her body grows hair.

Kaur boldly challenges traditional beauty standards time and time again; she wore flowers in her beard at her wedding in 2015 and walked in her first fashion show in 2016. She is an inspiration and a symbol of female empowerment for all women suffering from hirsutism.
