Should You Douche Your Yoni?

EmpressBody receive lots of questions about yoni douching and have put together some of the facts so women can finally achieve full and informed yoni empowerment. An estimated 20- 40% of American women between ages 15 and 44 say they use a vaginal douche. Higher rates are seen in African-American and Hispanic women. Women have advocated vaginal douching for many reasons; for creating a feeling of yoni freshness, to get rid of unpleasant odors, wash away menstrual blood after a period, avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, and even to prevent a pregnancy after intercourse. Aside from the feeling of yoni freshness, EmpressBody have found that the other effects or ‘benefits’ cannot be proven.

What Exactly Is Douching?

The word ''douche'' is French for ''wash'' or ''soak.'' It is a method to wash out the yoni, usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. Douches that are sold in drugstores and supermarkets contain antiseptics and fragrances. A douche comes in a bottle or bag and is sprayed through a tube upward into the yoni.

Are There Any Advantages?

Some women say douching makes them feel cleaner. EmpressBody feel it is very important to point out that there is very little scientific evidence of benefits from douching.

And The Disadvantages?

Overall, the risks of yoni douching far outweigh the benefits. Yoni douching can lead to yoni infections. Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina (called vaginal flora). These changes make the environment more favorable for the growth of bacteria that cause infections. Studies have found that women who stopped douching were less likely to have bacterial vaginosis. Having bacterial vaginosis can increase the risk of preterm labor and sexually transmitted infections.

Women who douche more than once a week have more difficulty getting pregnant than those who don't douche. Douching may also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy by as much as 76%. With an ectopic pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterus. The more a woman douches, the greater the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy.

Douching at least once a week has also been linked to a possible increased chance of developing cervical cancer.

Is There an Alternative?

EmpressBody would recommend women move away from yoni douching and opt for a more sensitive and gentle means of yoni cleaning; yoni steaming. Yoni steaming is less invasive and has been proven to help women with issues ranging from the physical to the emotional. In fact the EmpressBody Yoni Steam can help with and provide:
